Making Data POP! Telling Better Stories with Numbers! Presentation by Lavina Wiebe, Business Analyst

Do you know how to 'make your data POP and tell a better story with numbers' to your senior management team?
Do you know how to use color and lines to differentiate the data from the 'noise' in your charts and graphs?
Have you considered appropriate starting numbers to use for your bar or column charts and why this is so important?
These questions & more will be answered in this informal presentation.

Your Chapter Director of Communications:  Lavina Wiebe

What motivated you to volunteer with IIBA® Calgary Chapter?

  • I joined IIBA in 2012, but at the time I was not aware that there was a local chapter! I was in a new role where my title was actually 'Senior Business Analyst' and I wanted information on how to be one, so when I found IIBA website I signed up and downloaded the BABOK. In February of 2013 I attended a Chapter networking event and happened to meet the Chapter President who invited me to help out with BAWorld 2013, I've been voluntering on and off in various roles ever since.

What value does your Board position/portfolio provide to members of the Calgary Chapter?

  • Communications, communications, communications! Without quality communication plans our Chapter would not be able to function. This portfolio touches all of the other Board and Volunteer portfolios in many ways, just some of which are: this Newsletter, our social media accounts, study groups, events, our Chapter website, sponsorship correspondence and membership renewal reminders.

What is your favorite past time or hobby?

  • I've been honored to be a part of two corporate choirs in years past and greatly enjoy my ability to sing! Currently it's only for myself, but I'll probably sign up for another choir in the near future. I also read voraciously, and shop for books at thrift stores, so my home library doth overflow!

What book/podcast would you recommend to our members?

  •  Any book by Stephen Few, he's my favorite visual communication guru! His books cover how to go about creating good dashboards, representing numbers powerfully and accurately in charts, tables and graphs, and  overall how to better communicate data, especially so it tells an accurate story.

What tip, trick or advice can you suggest that will help your fellow BA's succeed?

  • Sleep on it! Sometime an issue or a solution to solve a problem can seem impossible to find, especially after trying for hours! Go home and have a good rest and quite often the solution will become clear by morning! This idea is backed up by neuroscientific research, in case you're doubting it! Try it next time you're 'stuck'.
  • Ask questions and then ask questions some more! Not sure you have the right stakeholders? Ask questions! Not sure everyone understands an issue? Ask questions! Wondering if there might be a different solution? Ask questions!
  • Trust your instincts! If something seems to be 'out of whack' or just 'off track', it probably is!
